Place and History

Ancient Skotoussa
Its name comes from the mystical meaning of the word darkness. The ancient city stretched to the south-western foothills of the Chalcodonian Mountains and was surrounded by streams with the main one being the Ongistos, today’s Platanorema. In the hilly area around it, there are places where the Amazons were buried, killed by Theseus. As they also testify the tree oracle of Zeus Figoneon which was the Homeric forerunner of the oracle of Dodona. Even that there was a famous thermal spring with immortal water that healed ulcers. The most dramatic page in its history was 369 BC when Alexander of Fera deceitfully murdered its male population and sold women and children as slaves. In 197 AD, the Roman troops defeated Philip V of Macedonia, on its hilly territory, subduing Thessaly in the battle known as Kynos Kefales. In ancient Skotoussa there was a sanctuary dedicated to Hercules, Apollo, Poseidon and the goddess Eleni of Sparta.

Who we are ?

We discovered wine on our travels! In travel we have discovered how to deal with prejudice and believe in our eyes and senses. So we opened our eyes to my hometown, which is famous since antiquity for its grains. With the help of my husband, who is an agronomist, we saw the special features: the terrain, the distribution of rain, the deep soils, the daily breeze, the natural ripening of the grapes and the Platanorema (ancient river Ongistos) to wet the feet of our vineyard … And in the dry landscape, we planted a bit of greenery and planted our vineyard against the prejudice that only grains grow here. Our dry vineyard thrives from good to best for fifteen years, against Climate change raises its green stature in the dry summer. In our small winery, we make only our own grapes according to our personal tastes, which give us a wonderful wine! Our varieties are only three: the Greek Malagouzia and the international Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc, which form a unique original combination. Our goal is to taste in our white wines a challenging journey beyond the tastings prejudices …
